Size names are a starting point
Mini, slim and regular are useful product labels, but they do not form a single universal set of dimensions. A size name should sit beside actual length, width, filling weight and the source of those measurements. Keep the material basis clear when a supplier gives a single pouch weight.
ZYN’s UK information distinguishes product formats within that market. Other brands may use the same words differently, and brands can change their terminology. A procurement drawing should therefore identify the precise version and dimensions instead of relying on a familiar marketing label.
Measure the filled pouch
A flat wrapper drawing and a finished filled pouch are different objects. Filling amount, bulk density, seam allowance and the wrapper can affect the final dimensions. Record whether a dimension refers to a cut piece, a sealed empty wrapper or the finished pouch.
For comparisons, document the conditioning of the sample and the measurement procedure. An approximate photograph-based estimate should be labeled as an estimate. It is unsuitable as an undisclosed substitute for a supplier’s production drawing. Our generated pictures show illustrative shapes and proportions; they are not dimensioned engineering evidence.
Heat sealing and ultrasonic-style seams
A crimped edge and a narrow smooth seam can look different, but appearance alone does not identify a complete manufacturing process. Request the wrapper material, seam width, sealing method and the tests used to check integrity. A photograph cannot establish process settings or sealing strength.
Treat performance as a set of measured requirements. The relevant questions include leakage, opening or tearing behavior, filling loss and consistency under the intended handling conditions. No seam style is universally superior without a defined material, product and test. A change in filling or wrapper can require renewed validation.
Cans have more than diameter
Record outer dimensions, usable internal volume, closure, liner or seal, disposal compartment and the intended number of pouches. A can diameter does not reveal capacity without the pouch format and packing arrangement. A total net weight is also different from the shipping weight.
A child-resistant feature needs documentation for the relevant standard, configuration and jurisdiction. The phrase should not be inferred from a difficult-to-open lid or copied from another product using a similar can. Package claims must remain tied to the package that was assessed.
Material and shelf-life questions
Ask the supplier for the identity of each food-contact or product-contact material, supporting declarations and any relevant migration or compatibility data. A statement about polypropylene does not document every additive, colorant, liner or contact component in a particular package.
Shelf life belongs to the product in its final package under stated conditions. Moisture transfer, flavor change, ingredient stability and closure performance can all be relevant to a study design. A can that looks identical to another brand’s can does not inherit that brand’s shelf life or test results.
A useful packaging specification
A practical specification contains drawings and tolerances, filling format, pouch count, package material, closure details, label areas and batch marking. Add packing arrangement, cans per carton, carton dimensions and handling requirements when they are known. Our quantity calculator helps with counts; it does not estimate unprovided factory capacity.
Keep approved samples and the associated revision record. If a wrapper, seam, can supplier or closure changes, document which requirements need to be checked again. The manufacturer directory provides contacts and published service descriptions, while qualification remains a separate review of the actual supplier, documents and samples.
